A little more nostalgic. A lot more intentional.

Coilie started with a simple observation: phones used to have a home. They lived on the kitchen wall, in the hallway, on a desk — somewhere you walked to, not somewhere you carried everywhere.

We're bringing that idea back, with a coiled cord, a wall-mounted perch, and a gentle invitation to be more present.

Why we made it

Most "screen time" tools try to fight you — blockers, timers, locks. They feel like punishment, and most people turn them off within a week.

Coilie takes the opposite approach, with an analog solution in a digital world. Instead of locking your phone down, it gives your phone a place. A perch. When your phone has a spot on the wall, you naturally pick it up less, leave it more often, and stop losing it three times a day.

No apps. No subscriptions. No guilt. Just a coiled cord, a beautiful perch, and the quiet wisdom of the landline.

Look, smartphones are amazing. Maps, boarding passes, splitting the dinner check, every photo of your kid since 2017. The answer isn't a clunky new "focus phone" gathering dust in a drawer next to your Fitbit. It's giving the phone you actually use a place to live.

We're too distracted

The research is in — and it's sobering. A few stats that pushed us to build Coilie:
  • The average adult attention span on a single screen has dropped from 2.5 minutes in 2004 to about 47 seconds today. (Dr. Gloria Mark, Attention Span, 2023)
  • After every interruption it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to fully refocus on the original task. (Mark et al., UC Irvine)
  • Americans check their phones an average of 186 times a day — roughly once every five waking minutes. (Reviews.org, 2025 phone-use survey)
  • Teen girls who spend 5+ hours a day on social media are significantly more likely to report depressive symptoms than light users. (Jean Twenge, iGen; Haidt, The Anxious Generation)
  • Teens spend an average of 4.8 hours a day on social media. (Gallup, 2023)
  • Simply having a phone visible on a desk — even face-down and silenced — measurably reduces working memory and problem-solving performance. (Ward et al., "Brain Drain," JCR, 2017)
  • In Stolen Focus, Johann Hari reports the average office worker now focuses on a single task for just about three minutes before switching. (Hari, Stolen Focus, 2022)
  • Heavy smartphone use at bedtime is linked to shorter sleep, lower sleep quality, and more daytime fatigue across dozens of peer-reviewed studies. (Meta-analyses in Sleep Medicine Reviews, 2021–2023)
