Two ways families use their perch

Whether your kids are too young for their own phone, or your whole household is ready to take back its evenings, Coilie gives every phone a home outside the bedroom and outside the pocket.

Option 1

The Family Phone

For families with younger kids who don't have their own phone yet.

Option 2

The Phone Zone

For households where everyone — kids and parents — has a phone.

The Family Phone for the smartphone era

Give your tween access to texting, calls, and music — without handing over a personal device. Coilie turns any phone into a shared, wall-mounted family phone that stays exactly where you left it. It's a ritual, not a rule.

Why a family phone just works

The landline taught generations of families how to share a device respectfully. Coilie brings that same calm to the smartphone.

Conversations happen in shared spaces, not behind closed doors

Tweens learn phone etiquette before they own one

Less pressure on kids to keep up with personal-phone culture

No phone in bedrooms means better sleep for everyone

You're naturally nearby when they're using it

One device, one location — no 'where's the phone?' chaos

Setting up your family phone

Pick the right spot

Mount it somewhere central — kitchen, hallway, living room. High enough that little ones can't grab it, low enough for tweens to use comfortably. Avoid bedrooms.

Set family hours

Agree on when the family phone is 'open' (after homework, before dinner) and when it's off-limits (meals, bedtime). The location makes it easy to enforce — no phone in the bedroom means no phone in the bedroom.

Configure once, relax

Use built-in parental controls (Screen Time on iPhone, Family Link on Android) to set app limits and content filters. Because the phone stays put, you'll always be nearby to check in.

Make it shared, not solo

Encourage your tween to use it openly — texting friends from the kitchen, FaceTiming grandma at the counter. Conversations stay in shared spaces, not behind closed doors.

Nobody's phone sleeps in the bedroom

For families where everyone already has a phone — including the older kids. One perch per person, all in the same room. Parents and kids follow the same agreement: when you're home, your phone lives on the wall.

Not different rules for parents than kids. A family deciding together to reduce phone reliance, and leaving phones docked because they chose to — together.

Nobody's phone sleeps in the bedroom

Every phone — parents included — docks before bed. No exceptions, no special cases. The bedroom goes back to being for sleep.

A shared anchor, not a punishment

One row of perches in a shared space. When you're home, your phone is on the wall. The decision is made once, together — not re-litigated every night.

Same rules for everyone

If teens have to dock, parents dock too. Kids don't trust 'do as I say.' They trust 'do as we do.' Coilie makes the standard visible.

Decided as a family

Sit down together and agree: when do phones come off the wall? When do they go back? It's a contract, not a top-down rule. Everyone has skin in the game.

Parent FAQ

Everything you might be wondering

What age is this best for?

The Family Phone setup works best for kids ages 8–13 — old enough to want connection with friends and family, young enough that a personal smartphone feels premature. The The Landing Zone setup is for households where everyone (including older teens and parents) already has a phone and wants to dock together.

Do I need a separate phone for the Family Phone Setup?

An old iPhone or Android works perfectly. Wipe it, set it up with a new Apple ID or Google account dedicated to the family phone, and you're done. No new phone plan needed if it's on Wi-Fi only — or add a low-cost line if you want texting and calls on the go.

Won't my kid just take it off the perch?

They can — it's not a lock. But the social contract is clear: phones live on the wall when you're home. In practice, both kids and adults stop carrying phones around because there's nowhere private to use them, and the cord makes it obvious when one is off-base.

What about emergencies when they're out?

Coilie is for home use. For Family Phone setups, many families pair it with a basic kid's smartwatch or flip phone, but you can also set up a basic plan for your perched phone for when kids are on the go. For Landing Zone setups, personal phones come off the wall when you leave the house.

Does it work with parental control apps?

Yes. Coilie is just a charger and perch — your phone's existing parental controls (Screen Time, Family Link, Bark, Qustodio, etc.) all work normally.

Can adults use it too?

Absolutely — that's the whole point of the Landing Zone setup. Plenty of adults also use Coilie solo as a personal 'perch' to cut down on doomscrolling.
